A wartime incident that is seldom commemorated involves the tragic death of three Merchant Seamen who were killed as a result of enemy action. The 3rd of August 2020 will witness the 80th Anniversary of the day when a Japanese submarine, I-175 shelled the large fishing trawler 'Dureenbee' about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Moruya. This attack, using machineguns and artillery shells upon a Merchant vessel was an inexcusable act. The Captain of the trawler pleading with the surfaced submarine to hold her fire, that they were unarmed and merely a civilian fishing craft. Three of Dureenbee's crew now lie buried in Moruya Cemetery as a silent witnesses to a this horrible act of war. Learning this year was the 80th Anniversary of their death, Moruya Markets were of the opinion this major anniversary should not pass unnoticed. As a result, the Moruya Markets has agreed to recognise this part in our local history with the commissioning of a bronze plaque as a memorial to all Merchant seamen
On Saturday Kay Nash presented Gary Traynor with a cheque of $1000 towards this project
